Injury and surgery can be disruptive events affecting an individual’s ability to carry out their daily tasks. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process following an injury or surgery.
With physiotherapy, you can improve your strength and mobility through the use of exercises, stretches, and other treatments. It can be used to manage a variety of conditions such as musculoskeletal injuries, neurological conditions, and cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.
In the early stages of rehabilitation, physiotherapy may focus on reducing pain and swelling through the use of heat and ice therapy, electrical stimulation, and massage. These treatments can help to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow to the affected area, which can in turn help to alleviate pain and promote healing.
In the later stages of rehabilitation, physiotherapy may focus on restoring functional abilities and helping the individual return to their pre-injury or pre-surgery level of activity. This can include gait training, balance training, and functional exercises.
Our Client Story: Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
Jay is a passionate motorcyclist who had to get to grips with multiple fractures to his spine and subsequent complications after a severe motorcycle accident. It is through physiotherapy that Jay managed to regain his active lifestyle.
He began physiotherapy with us in 2022 intending to manage his pain and improve his mobility so he could go back to doing the things he loved. However, this was further complicated by a serious shoulder injury – a complete rupture of the acromioclavicular joint – on top of the injuries from his accident. This significantly impacted his quality of life and limited his ability to participate in competitive and social motorcycle riding, a hobby that he enjoyed very much.
The treatment plan created by our physiotherapist targeted three key areas: his neck, lower back, and shoulder.
This plan was adjusted according to Jay’s needs. In the beginning, the focus was on protecting his shoulder joint post-injury while maintaining a safe range of movement. As Jay’s shoulder stabilised, we introduced more strength-building exercises. As he became stronger and could return to his sport, these exercises were modified to be more intense. This included rigid taping to aid joint stability during motorcycle riding, ensuring Jay could safely resume his activities.
In the whole process, we educated Jay on the importance of each stage of rehabilitation, emphasising the balance between progress and caution to optimise outcomes. With regular assessments of strength, range of movement, pain levels, and the impact on daily activities, he was able to recover well.
In the end, despite the severity and complexity of his injuries, Jay has made significant progress in his rehabilitation through dedicated physiotherapy and his unwavering resolve. Today, he continues with maintenance treatments to build resilience and prevent re-injury as he returns to motorcycle riding and reclaims much of his active lifestyle.
Jay’s story shows that physiotherapy is an essential component of the rehabilitation process after an injury or surgery. With expert care, dedication, and perseverance, our physiotherapists can help you achieve significant progress, even in the face of complex injuries.
