Wrist Sprain Treatment

What is a Wrist Sprain

A wrist sprain occurs when the ligaments that connect the bones in your wrist are stretched or torn. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that help stabilise your wrist joint.

The condition develops when your wrist is forced beyond its normal range of motion. This typically happens during a fall when you land on an outstretched hand.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, and tenderness around the wrist. Bruising may appear, and you might hear or feel a popping sensation at the time of injury.

Symptoms often worsen with movement, gripping, or putting weight on the affected hand. Stiffness and reduced range of motion are also common, similar to other forms of joint pain and stiffness.

Wrist sprains are graded from mild (Grade 1) to severe (Grade 3). Severe sprains involve complete ligament tears and require more intensive treatment.

Our Wrist Sprain Treatment Services

We use a range of physiotherapy modalities and techniques to treat wrist sprains.

Treatment includes rest and ice therapy in the early stages to reduce swelling and pain. We also use compression and elevation techniques.

As healing progresses, we introduce gentle range of motion exercises. Soft tissue massage helps reduce stiffness and improve circulation.

Strengthening exercises gradually rebuild wrist stability and function. We also provide taping or bracing to protect the wrist during recovery.

Physiotherapy is a holistic and long-term treatment. We provide education on proper hand positioning, activity modification, and techniques to prevent re-injury. For those with wrist discomfort from desk work, we can also assess for conditions like repetitive strain wrist injuries.

By improving ligament healing and restoring wrist strength, physiotherapy can return you to normal activities. This reduces the risk of chronic instability or arthritis.

Our approach draws on proven sports injury physiotherapy principles. For athletes and active individuals, we also offer sports massage to support recovery and performance.
