Whiplash Associated Disorders

Whiplash Associated Disorders

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head, most often after a road traffic collision. Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) is the term used for the range of symptoms that can follow, from neck pain and stiffness to headaches and reduced movement. Symptoms may appear straight away or develop over the following days, and they can affect work, sleep and concentration.

Causes

  • Rear-end or side-impact road traffic collisions, the most common cause
  • Sports tackles or collisions, particularly in contact sports
  • Falls or slips that suddenly jolt the head and neck
  • Any sudden impact that forces the neck beyond its normal range

Symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Reduced range of movement in the neck
  • Headaches, often starting at the base of the skull
  • Pain or tightness across the shoulders and upper back
  • Dizziness, fatigue or difficulty concentrating

Our Treatment for Whiplash

Whiplash usually responds well to physiotherapy, particularly when treatment starts early. After an initial assessment, our physiotherapy team will use manual therapy and soft tissue massage to ease stiffness, alongside graded exercises to restore movement and rebuild strength in the neck and upper back. We also give advice on posture, sleeping positions and a safe return to normal activity, and can link in with your neck pain rehabilitation where symptoms overlap. Staying gently active is important, as prolonged rest tends to slow recovery.

Many people recover within a few weeks, though more significant or long-standing whiplash associated disorders can take several months. Early treatment, much like with other sports injury rehabilitation, gives the best outcome.

“Had 6 sessions with Jo-Anne for whiplash and knee injury following a car accident. I was really impressed with Jo-Anne’s approach to rehabilitation and knowledge to solve the problems.” Robert Gubbins – Congleton
