Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is inflammation of the tendons that attach your forearm muscles to the bony point on the outside of your elbow. If turning a door handle, lifting a kettle, or even shaking hands has started to bring on a sharp ache, you’ll know how much it gets in the way of ordinary tasks.
Despite the name, most people who get tennis elbow have never picked up a racket. It tends to build gradually from repetitive gripping and wrist movement: a big DIY job over a weekend, hours at a keyboard, or manual work involving the same motion again and again. The tendon gets overloaded faster than it can repair itself, and small tears start to form where it attaches to the bone.
This pattern is common to a lot of repetitive strain injuries, and it can drag on for months if the movement causing it isn’t changed alongside treatment.
At True Physio, we start by working out what’s actually driving the strain, whether that’s a work task, a change in your gym routine, or simply how you’re gripping tools day to day. From there, your physiotherapist will build a plan that usually combines manual therapy and soft tissue massage to settle pain early on, with a graded programme of strengthening exercises to rebuild the tendon’s capacity to cope with load.
For tendons that haven’t responded to rest and exercise alone, shockwave therapy can help kick-start healing. Most people notice a real improvement within six to eight weeks of consistent treatment, though more stubborn cases can take a couple of months longer to settle fully.
