Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve, which runs along the inner side of your elbow, becomes compressed or irritated. This nerve controls sensation in your ring and little fingers and some small hand muscles.
The condition develops when pressure is placed on the nerve as it passes through the cubital tunnel, a narrow passageway on the inside of the elbow.
Symptoms include numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” sensation in the ring and little fingers. Pain may be felt along the inner elbow and can radiate down the forearm into the hand.
Symptoms often worsen when the elbow is bent for prolonged periods, such as during sleep, phone calls, or driving.
Common causes include :
Similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, this is a nerve compression condition. Like other repetitive strain injuries, repetitive movements can contribute to its development.
We use a range of physiotherapy modalities and techniques to treat cubital tunnel syndrome.
Treatment includes nerve gliding exercises, soft tissue massage, ergonomic advice, elbow padding or splinting, and strengthening exercises.
Physiotherapy is a holistic and long-term treatment. We provide education on posture, activity modification, and techniques to avoid nerve compression.
By improving nerve mobility and reducing compression, physiotherapy can restore normal sensation and hand function. This reduces the need for pain medication or surgery.
“I had been suffering from numbness in my fingers for months, especially at night. After just a few sessions, I learned exercises and positioning techniques that made a huge difference. The team was patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely cared about my recovery. I can now sleep through the night without waking up with tingling hands!” Trevor S – Skipton
