Trigger finger is a condition where a finger or thumb catches, clicks or locks when you bend and straighten it. It happens when the tendon that bends your finger becomes irritated or thickened and cannot move smoothly through the narrow tunnel that surrounds it. Medically, this is known as stenosing tendinopathy.
Early symptoms often include stiffness, especially first thing in the morning, and tenderness at the base of the affected finger or thumb. As it progresses, the finger may briefly lock in a bent position and need gentle pressure to straighten.
Trigger finger often develops gradually and is linked to repeated gripping or prolonged hand use. It is more common in people over 40 and in those with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.
In some cases, symptoms settle within a few weeks if strain is reduced. If stiffness or locking persists, assessment can help prevent further restriction.

The best treatment for trigger finger depends on how severe the symptoms are and how long they have been present. An assessment helps determine which stage of treatment is most appropriate and guides a personalised plan.
In milder cases, reducing aggravating activities may allow the finger to settle. A night splint can help keep it straight and reduce irritation while it recovers.
Physiotherapy aims to improve tendon movement and reduce stiffness through hands-on treatment, targeted exercises and advice on modifying grip or repetitive tasks. Shockwave therapy may also be considered in more persistent cases to support tendon recovery.
If symptoms continue, a steroid injection may be recommended to reduce swelling around the tendon. In more severe or locked cases, a minor procedure called trigger release may be considered.
Trigger finger can be frustrating, especially when simple things like gripping, typing or holding a cup become uncomfortable. A thorough assessment helps us understand how restricted the tendon is and which stage of treatment will suit you best.
