Sciatica is pain that travels along the sciatic nerve, running from your lower back down through your hip, buttock and leg. If you’re dealing with it, you’ll know the feeling: a sharp, burning or shooting pain that can make sitting, standing or even lying down uncomfortable, sometimes alongside numbness or tingling in the leg or foot.
Sciatica usually starts with something pressing on or irritating the sciatic nerve, often a herniated disc in the lower spine. It can also be triggered by spinal stenosis, muscle spasm, or a change in how you’ve been sitting or lifting at work. For some people it comes on suddenly after a specific movement; for others it builds gradually over weeks. Conditions such as spinal stenosis can produce very similar symptoms, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters before treatment begins.
At your initial assessment, one of our physiotherapists will work out exactly where the irritation is coming from and what’s driving it. Treatment often combines manual therapy, nerve gliding exercises and targeted strengthening to take pressure off the nerve and improve how your spine moves. As pain settles, we’ll build up your core and hip strength to reduce the chance of it flaring up again. Physiotherapy remains the most effective first step for most people with sciatica, and for those with ongoing muscle tightness alongside their symptoms, massage therapy can also help release tension around the lower back and hips. Once you’re pain-free, sports therapy can support a safe return to running or your usual training.
Most people notice a real improvement within a few weeks of starting treatment, though how long full recovery takes depends on the underlying cause and how long you’ve been living with the pain.
