Golfers Elbow

Causes, Symptoms, and Expert Treatment

What is Golfers Elbow?

Golfers elbow is a condition that causes pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow. Medically known as medial epicondylitis, it affects the tendons where the forearm muscles attach to the bone. The condition develops gradually when these tendons are repeatedly overloaded through gripping, lifting or twisting movements.

Although commonly linked to golf, it is not limited to the sport. It is one of the more common golf injuries, but it can also affect manual workers, gym users, climbers and anyone performing repetitive wrist or finger movements.

Symptoms often begin as a mild ache on the inside of the elbow and may worsen when gripping objects, lifting with the palm facing upwards or turning a handle. If left untreated, golfer’s elbow can gradually worsen and begin to limit everyday activities such as carrying bags, shaking hands or holding a cup comfortably.

How Golfer’s Elbow is Treated

Golfer’s elbow is closely related to tennis elbow, although pain is felt on the inner side of the joint rather than the outer. When comparing tennis v golfer’s elbow, rehabilitation principles are similar, but the tendons involved require slightly different loading strategies.

Physiotherapy focuses on settling irritation in the tendon while rebuilding strength in the forearm. Early management may include relative rest and hands-on physiotherapy, followed by a structured strengthening programme to help the tendon tolerate daily tasks again.

Taping or a compression brace can help reduce strain, and ice or heat may offer short-term comfort, but the safest way to treat golfer’s elbow is always through a personalised treatment plan from an accredited therapist.

For more persistent symptoms, shockwave therapy may be used alongside physiotherapy. Sports massage can support recovery by easing muscle tightness in the forearm where appropriate.
