ACL Reconstruction Rehabilitation

ACL Reconstruction Rehabilitation

ACL reconstruction rehabilitation is the structured recovery programme that follows surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament, one of the key stabilising structures of the knee. Recovery typically spans 9 to 12 months and requires a carefully progressed plan that rebuilds strength, stability, and confidence before returning to sport. The quality of rehabilitation from the outset is the primary factor in achieving a full and lasting recovery.

What Does ACL Rehabilitation Involve?

Effective ACL reconstruction rehabilitation follows a structured, phased approach. Rather than rushing straight back to running, we build systematically from protection through to power and agility. Each phase builds on the last, with clear, measurable goals. Most people complete the process in 9–12 months, though elite athletes may extend this timeline for optimal results.

  • Phase 1 (0–6 weeks): Swelling control, early range of movement, and quadriceps activation to restore basic function
  • Phase 2 (6–12 weeks): Progressive strength building in the quad, hamstring, and glutes to establish a solid foundation
  • Phase 3 (3–6 months): Power, proprioception, and neuromuscular control through running, cutting, and agility drills
  • Phase 4 (6+ months): Sport-specific training and criteria-based return to play, determined by objective testing rather than time alone

Our ACL Rehabilitation Programme

At True Physio, we combine hands-on physiotherapy with a structured exercise programme and rigorous outcome measurement. Readiness to progress is never assumed,  it is confirmed through objective testing at every stage, covering strength symmetry, hop distance, and cutting speed. This evidence-based approach gives you and us the confidence to return to sport safely.

  • Massage therapy and soft tissue work to reduce pain, restore mobility, and prepare muscles for loading
  • Exercise programme design tailored to your sport, position, and individual movement profile
  • Objective strength and symmetry testing at key milestones to guide progression and prevent re-injury
  • Psychological support and education to rebuild your confidence in your body and help you trust your knee as you return to full activity

“I initially saw Rick and he was great with the diagnosis and preparation before my operation. After the op, John Bowen Davies helped me massively to get the range, movement and strength back into my leg after having an ACL reconstruction. I cannot fault the professional support and highly recommend.” Sam Ridout – Nantwich
