Steve’s Journey: From Military Setback to Ironman Triumph

Introduction

The Challenge

Steve’s journey has been anything but smooth. His challenges began in 1994 when he suffered a severe back injury while running for a military vehicle in the Falklands. Diagnosed with desiccation of the L4/5 and L5/S1 discs, alongside annular tears at both levels, Steve was medically discharged and faced a future filled with pain and uncertainty. The situation worsened after completing the New York Marathon in 1997 when back pain and sciatica became daily hurdles, forcing him to stop exercising altogether.

For years, Steve avoided sports and sought advice from spinal consultants, but relief remained elusive. It wasn’t until 2011 that he stumbled upon cycling, reigniting his passion for physical activity. However, new challenges arose—persistent knee issues led to regular acupuncture treatments and eventually knee arthroscopy in 2012. After a slow recovery, Steve returned to cycling and completed the gruelling Lands’ End to John O’Groats 1000-mile race.

Despite undergoing L4/5 and L5/S1 disc replacement surgery in 2012, Steve continued to face intermittent back issues, sciatic nerve irritation, and tightness around his hips due to the intensity of his training.

Treatment and Progress

We designed a comprehensive treatment plan to help Steve manage his pain and maintain his active lifestyle. This included regular soft tissue work every two weeks, back and joint mobilisation, and a tailored flexibility and mobility exercise program to combat the tightness and stiffness from his intensive training.

Recognising the importance of core strength, we gradually progressed Steve’s exercises, focusing on strengthening his core, lower limbs, and pelvic area. Through consistent work and determination, Steve was able to manage his everyday discomfort and significantly reduce his lower back pain.

The Outcome

Steve’s hard work and perseverance paid off. Since 2022, he has completed the Yorkshire, Manchester, and Chicago Marathons. Even when heel pain during training for the Boston Marathon in 2024 threatened to derail his progress, Steve’s resilience saw him through to complete the Roth Ironman in Germany that summer—a remarkable feat.

Steve’s dedication is truly inspiring. His willingness to push through the pain and continue to strive for excellence is a testament to his character. We’re proud to have played a part in his incredible journey. Ben Ratcliffe, Physiotherapist, Clinic Manager

Steve’s journey is a testament to his determination and “never give up” attitude. He continues to push his limits and is now training for the Berlin Marathon in September 2024, with plans to conquer the London and Tokyo Marathons in 2025.
