Jumper’s Knee

What Is Jumper’s Knee?

Jumper's Knee

Jumper’s knee, also known as patellar tendinopathy, is an overuse injury affecting the patellar tendon that connects the kneecap to the shinbone. It is particularly common in athletes who perform repetitive jumping and sprinting, basketball players, netballers, footballers and runners, and produces pain below the kneecap that worsens with loading activity. Without appropriate management, it rarely resolves on its own.

What Causes Jumper’s Knee?

  • Rapid increases in training load or intensity
  • Repetitive jumping and sprinting movements
  • Weakness or tightness in the quadriceps muscle
  • Poor hip and knee biomechanics during movement
  • Inadequate recovery between training sessions

Jumper’s knee is similar to conditions like Osgood-Schlatter disease, though it occurs in the tendon rather than the growth plate. It can also be mistaken for patellofemoral pain, which requires a different treatment approach.

Our Treatment for Jumper’s Knee

Progressive loading is central to tendon recovery, and at True Physio, our physiotherapy team uses evidence-based methods to rebuild your patellar tendon and restore your performance.

  • Progressive tendon loading programmes combining isometric and heavy slow resistance exercises to strengthen the tendon
  • Sports massage and soft tissue work to reduce tension and improve blood flow
  • Biomechanical retraining to correct movement patterns at the hip and knee
  • Shockwave therapy for chronic cases to stimulate healing

Most athletes see meaningful improvement within 6–12 weeks with consistent treatment and adherence to their programme.

“I visited True Physio with mid-portion tendinopathy which was problematic and debilitating. I had Jason for 10 sessions of shockwave therapy and physiotherapy and couldn’t be happier with the results. Jason listened to my descriptions of pain and was able to create a recovery programme that suited me and my lifestyle. Would happily recommend. 10/10.” Tom Fleming – Crewe
